View from the Scorer's Table: April 23rd, 2014
By Kyle DaLuz

I recently became an employee at Mass Premier Courts
(MPC) in Foxboro and during my brief time there, I’ve witnessed some pretty
intense AAU basketball games – along with the occasional blow out. As a
scorekeeper, I get to see a lot of the good things that come along with amateur
athletics – the competition, effort and hustle, and the desire to advance to
win tournaments.
In contrast, I’ve also witnessed a few negative aspects
that come along with AAU basketball. Certainly, the good outweighs the bad, but
one vivid incident from this past weekend struck me.
I was assigned four games last Saturday afternoon. The
first two were close, clean games that came down to the wire – the best kind of
games to watch. The third game was not so clean or competitive. An 8th
grade team from Connecticut brought out an extreme negative that I’d never seen
in youth basketball before.
This particular team from CT was struggling early from
both sides of the floor. They had difficulty shooting and found themselves in a
pretty significant hole early on. While trailing by about 20 points to a
superior opponent, the two coaches for the CT team began a vicious verbal assault
on the two referees, who were doing a pretty decent job from my view point of
calling the game fairly and as best they could. Every time the whistle was
blown against their team, they’d contest with an “Oh c’mon, sir! Are you
serious?” When a call was not made on what they thought was a violation against
their opponent, which coincidentally seemed to be every other time down the
floor, a “That’s a foul, sir! Call it both ways, sir!” would be hollered from
the bench. A few profanities were mixed in as well.
There is a difference in this sort of thing happening once
or twice a game versus continuous badgering from tip-off all the way to the
final buzzer. After about 10 minutes of constant yapping from the sideline, the
head coach was assessed a technical foul and was told to remain seated for the
remainder of the contest – which I’d like to point out, was an order that was
not followed.
The game became closer in the second half, yet the team
from Connecticut could not make up the deficit. The players themselves had no
real issues with the flow of play until the second half, in which they followed
the example set by their coaches and started to complain to the zebras as well.
With a double-digit lead and under three minutes to play,
the coach of the winning team instructed his players to pass the ball around to
waste a little clock and look for a good shot in the process. The coach from CT
did not take a liking to this, as he hollered over across the scorer’s table,
“This isn’t fun coach! This is NOT fun! This is not how basketball should be
played!” The other coach did not hear this, but seeing as I was sitting right
there in the crossfire, I did.
In the final minutes, the CT team had to play with only
four players, because this coach thought it was a logical decision to foul
while being down close to 15 points with under a minute to play.
Obviously, they were trying to make a point. One player
was thrown out of the game due to an aggressive hit while trying to
intentionally foul. The referee that had issued the technical foul earlier on
told the coach that someone was going to get hurt if the aggressive play
continued, and got a response of, “It’s all your fault, sir! All your fault.”
Nothing else really ensued post-game, but this was
something that was so outrageous that I felt should never take place during anytime
of competition.
Don’t get me wrong, I follow all four major professional
sports and have watched many a sports games in my life. I understand games are
intense, and sometimes tempers boil over. There is a difference between being
frustrated with a call by an official, and being on someone’s case for the
entire duration of a contest.
The good certainly outweighs the bad in all of these
tournaments by a long shot, but this is one incident that stuck out in
particular as something so ridiculous that I feel should never take place in
youth athletics.

MPC Swish Report
Central Mass Shooters (9th) 57
MPC Swish (8th) 55
The MPC Swish suffered its first loss of the season over the weekend during the Mass Premier Courts Home for Easter tournament at the hands of the Central Mass Shooters who lived up to their nickname in this contest by nailing numerous back breaking 3-pointers en route to a one-point victory.
The first half was a game of runs as the Swish jumped out to an early 9-1 cushion, but CM Shooters fought back to take a 13-12 lead, its first of the game. The teams traded runs for the duration of the half, and the Shooters ended on one to take a 32-24 lead into the half.
The Shooters lead was as big as 14 in the second half before the Swish executed a spirited comeback behind some intense defense and timely scoring. After a missed Shooters FT, Ashley Sampson was able to get into the lane for a contested shot that just fell short at the buzzer.
Without leading scorer Anna Shaughnessy due to illness for this Friday early evening tilt, the Swish settled far too many perimeter shots and finished a dreadful 3-19 from behind the arch. Things didn't get too much better from the free throw line as the squad finished 14-25.
The play of Tess Sussman was a bright spot for the Swish. The versatile player finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block. The starting backcourt of Ashley Sampson and Nicole Gallagher also registered strong games. Gallagher nearly double-doubled with 13 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Sampson picked up the scoring hole left by Shaughnessy, as the point guard notched 10 points, four steals and three assists.
MPC Swish (8th) 52
Bay State Monarchs (HS) 33
The MPC Swish bounced back from its first loss of the season with a solid win over a physical Bay State Monarchs squad.
The two teams were evenly matched through the first half with Swish holding onto a narrow five-point lead. In the second half, the Swish turned up the intensity and eventually pulled away from the feisty Monarchs 52-33.
Nicole Gallagher led the Swish scoring with 15. After missing the game on Friday with an illness, Anna Shaughnessy returned to chip in with 13 points. Kiera Fernandes added 10 in the victory.
Granite State Rockettes (10th) 55
MPC Swish (8th) 54
In probably the best all-around game I have ever seen the Swish play, their best wasn't good enough to beat the older team from New Hampshire as the Rockettes nailed a 3-pointer with three seconds left to walk away victorious over the locals, 55-54.
In a wire-to-wire back-and-forth game, the Swish took a late two-point lead that was thought to be the difference. However it wasn't meant to be as the Rockettes coach drew up and out of bounds play that saw his best shooter hit a deep three for the win.
In a game where all 10 players contributed in each half, the Swish were again led in the scoring department by Nicole Gallagher's 14. Anna Shaughnessy added 13 points. Tess Sussman turned in a typical stat stuffing performance with 11 points, five boards, three assists and two steals.
With the loss, the Swish dropped to 12-2 on the season. The Swish travel to Westport, Connecticut this upcoming weekend to lock up with some of the best programs in CT/NY at the Blue Chip Preseason Challenge.

Submitted Weekend Scores
8th Grade Girls
The MPC Swish improved to 11-0 on the season after downing
two 10th grade teams at the Cape Cod Waves tournament last Saturday.
MPC Swish 69
CT Cobras 38
The Swish jumped out to a 12-2 lead and never looked back.
Three players reached double digit scoring in the win led by Anna Shaughnessy’s
16 points on efficient 7-11 shooting and also hauled in eight rebounds. Kaylin
Reen continued her torrid shooting streak as she tossed in three 3-pointers en
route to 11 points. Combo-guard Nicole Gallagher slashed her way to 10 points
and added four steals.
MPC Swish 42
VT Pacers 40
Initially not thrilled about having to play an 8th
grade team, the scrappy 10th grade VT team was unable to outlast the
local 8th grade squad. The Pacers held a 20-16 edge at halftime, but
the Swish clamped down in the second half and won a close battle. Again, Anna
Shaughnessy led the scoring charge with 12 points and added seven rebounds.
Tess Sussman nearly had a double-double with eight points and eight rebounds.
Kiera Fernandes contributed with a little bit of everything as she stuffed the
stat sheet with six points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. As usual,
Ashley Sampson steadied the ship from the point guard spot and finished with seven
points and three assists.

Bay State Magic Elite played up at the 8th grade
level at the Zero Gravity tournament in Boston and swept the competition.

Bay State Magic Elite 2017
In a very loaded 9th
grade girls division, Bay State Magic Elite is still the team to beat until a
team dethrones them. BSME, coached by Jim Wardwell, has captured two
consecutive D1 MA state championships and finished third at the Nationals last
summer.
BSME plans to attend
the best tournaments on the east coast such as Basketball HOF Tip-Off, North
East Elite Showcase, Deep South Classic, Commotion by the Ocean, Gym Rat
Challenge, Nike US Nationals and Blue Chip Showcase in Philly.
This up-tempo team
showcases some of the best players in the state including Jen Worden (Abington),
Hayley Wardwell (Cardinal Spellman), Joie Grassi (Plymouth North), Meaghan Raab
(Hanover), Haley Blasetti (Hingham 8th grade), Ally Dillon (Braintree),
Vanessa Nichols (Silver Lake), Ashley Cadorette (Dartmouth), and Gordon (Holy
Name).
This team has a roster
loaded with players that contribute on their varsity team already, but Coach
Wardwell cites that the team goal is to have all the players make significant
varsity contributions as sophomores.
I plan on following
this team closely as they hit some of the best tournaments in the country.

Submitted AAU Scores / MPC Swish Report
8th Grade Girls
Mass Premier Swish 44
Bay State Jaguars 43
Westfield State College - In a battle between two of New
England’s elite teams, the Mass Premier Swish kicked off its spring season with
an exciting one-point victory over Bay State Jaguars, 44-43. It was the first
game of the season for both teams and the rust was evident.
The teams went into halftime knotted up at 22 and exchanged
leads the rest of the way. The Swish held a four-point lead late in the waning
seconds of the game before Jags newcomer Lexi Greffen (Portsmouth, RI) buried a 3-pointer to cut
the lead to one-point before time expired.
Anna Shaughnessy (North Attleboro) led MPC Swish with a
double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nicole Gallagher (Foxboro) filled
up the box score with 11 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists in
her first game back with the Swish after playing the previous two seasons up an
age level with MT Elite. Kiera Fernandes (Franklin) had a very productive game
as she added nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Mass Premier Swish 59
CT Spirit 36
Westfield State College – The MPC Swish made quick work of
CT Spirit and everyone contributed in their second victory of the afternoon.
Tess Sussman (Needham) and Ashley Sampson (Foxboro) led the scoring charge with
10 points apiece. Kiera Fernandes had another solid game with eight points,
nine rebounds and two steals.
Mass Premier Swish 40
Albany Falcons B 14
American International College – Needing to win this game to
advance to the semi-final, MPC Swish came out inspired and jumped out to a 12-0
lead quickly and never looked back. Nicole Gallagher led a balanced effort with
10 points, five rebounds and three steals.
Mass Premier Swish 75
Springfield Lady Ballers 63
American International College – The Lady Ballers scored off
the opening tip, but that would be the only lead the host club would enjoy
