  • Attleboro Rallies to Beat Canton

Attleboro 44
(5)Canton 42

Sometimes defense can be a team’s best offense. Attleboro found themselves down 17 points in the second half and then executed a half court, trapping defense that caused turnovers that were cashed in for transition buckets en route to a two-point victory, 44-42.

“A steal by Desmond Woodson and pass and basket by Kyle Marrapese gave us 42-41 lead with 45 seconds left,” explained Attleboro coach Mark Houle.

Point guard Mason Houle then went on to hit two foul shots with 15 seconds to give Attleboro a 44-41 lead. Canton hit a foul shot with three seconds left to make it 44-42 and then tried to intentionally miss the second one but was called for a lane violation resulting in a final of 44-42.

“Proud of the defensive effort in the second half limiting Canton to 11 points and no second chance points,” said Houle.

David Santiago, Kevin Velasquez and Tyler Churchill all played well on both ends of the court.  Point guard Mason Houle controlled the pace of the game, dished out several assists to go along with critical foul shots at the end of the game.
  • Easton Outlasts Southboro

(15)Easton 52
(14)Southboro 44

The Easton boys traveled to Southboro in a battle of evenly matched teams. Easton came out the gate with tenacious defense that limited Southboro to only three first quarter points which enabled Easton to grab an 11-point halftime edge.

That lead was short lived as Southboro cut that deficit to three points in the third quarter, but Easton’s depth and balance was too much for the home team to overcome.

Chris Pearsons, Sean O’Brien, Tim Kemp and Jake Erlich all scored double digits for Easton in the win.
  • Wareham Knocks Off Raynham

Wareham 63
(23)Raynham 60

In a high scoring contest, Wareham knocked off Raynham for the second time this season.

Wareham was led by Justin Lopes’s 23 points. Connor Walsh added 15 points in the win.

  • Westwood Hands Wellesley First Loss

(14)Westwood 30
(2)Wellesley 29
In an extremely competitive Metro West division-one league, Westwood is a game under .500. However, they scored their biggest win of the season by edging previously unbeaten Wellesley by one point this past Sunday, 30-29.

"I couldn't be prouder of the girls and the way they have developed over the first half of the season,” said Westwood coach Christy Harrison. “They have really been working on defense and it showed in the game versus Wellesley. Holding Wellesley to only 29 points was huge and couldn't have been done without the smart defensive play of all of the girls. They are a smart, athletically driven group and I expected to see tremendous growth in the second half of the season."

With studs like Sabrina Zeghibe, Hannah Bean and Lauren MacDonald on the roster, the sky is the limit during the second half of the season for the Wolverines.
  • Natick Knocks Off Mansfield

(25)Natick 47

  • Hornets Sting Attleboro

(10)Mansfield 46
(1)Attleboro 45

Mansfield has a quote “Teammates First” on their warm-up shirts and coach Paul Mordarski told me the boys lived up to that mantra when they knocked off the number-one ranked Attleboro squad this past Sunday.

“Given Attleboro’s skill level, the boys consistently needed to pick each other up in a positive manner,” said Mordarski. “Without that positive attitude, we lose for sure.”

He also attributed the unselfish mindset to some steady, patient and effective half court offense.

However, it was the intense, disciplined defense that carried the day holding Attleboro, a team that regularly scores above 60, to 45 points. Mansfield mixed defenses throughout the game to keep Attleboro of balance.

Nine players on Mansfield found their way into the scoring column led by John Carney’s 11 points.

  • Newton Back in Win Column

(14)Newton 62
(5)Belmont 58

As sixth graders, Newton rolled to an undefeated record. This year, they have some blemishes on the record, but recorded a quality win over the weekend against a strong Belmont squad.

This squad will be scary come playoff time. The Newton basketball program is as strong as it gets and this team is one of the strongest in their program.

  • North Quincy Downs Westwood

North Quincy 59
(22)Westwood 51

North Quincy earned a quality win over Westwood on Sunday, 59-51.

"It was a tough, hard fought game, each team had its own share of runs and competed until the final whistle,” said North Quincy coach Kyle Costa. “I think our team defense and guys being locked into their assignments helped us to get the victory."

Franck Yhomby led the way with 28 points and 12 rebounds. Declan O’Sullivan chipped in 12 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.

  • Easton’s “D” Keys “W” Over Milton

(18)Easton 31, (9)Milton 27
“It was a great team win to hold a team like Milton to 27 points,” said coach Jim Holleran of his team’s stifling defensive effort.

Megan Holleran led Easton with 11 points and Erin Holmberg added eight points. Jordyn Vella was the backbone of that defense with five blocked shots in the victory.

  • Hanson Decisive Pair of Wins

(11)Hanson 44, Hull 15
(11)Hanson 42, East Bridgewater 11

The Pembroke Titans were led by Katie Galligan’s 13 points. Bella Pizzi added 11 points. Kristi Vierra had 15 points in the loss for Norwell.

6th Grade Boys Notebook - January 28th

  • Fifth-Ranked Hingham Upset Twice
(10)Hanover 41, (5)Hingham 32
After trailing by eight at halftime, Hanover switched things up and found success applying various full court presses and caused several Hingham turnovers. Hanover’s backcourt duo of Patrick Mullane and Ian Kirby led the charge and were the real difference makers. Hanover ended up outscoring Hingham by nearly 20 points in the second half in a great overall team win.

Weymouth over (5)Hingham
In addition to losing to Hanover, they also dropped a game to unranked Weymouth.

Hingham has been dominant all year, and still sit at 10-3 on the season and will still remain a staple in our top 25.
  • Franklin Halts Barrington's Win Streak

(19)Franklin 34, (12)Barrington 24
The lone Rhode Island team in Metro West entered this game undefeated, but Franklin got the best of them, 34-24.
  • Wayland Runs With and Past Randolph

(20)Wayland 59, (13)Randolph 56
Wayland handed Randolph their first loss of the season to even these two Metro West D2 titans record at 6-1.

Randolph played an uptempo game and Wayland was able to run with the. In the fourth quarter, Randolph rallied to take the lead by Wayland was about to comeback to take the lead and close out the game behind clutch free throw shooting and a key defensive stop.

Wayland’s Nick Dresens led an excellent team effort with 22 rebounds and the go-ahead free throw in the last minute.
